What do you need to set up a hookah at home?

Five things: the hookah itself (stem, base and hose), a bowl, shisha (the wet flavored tobacco), coals, and a heat management device or foil to sit between the coals and the tobacco. The whole kit assembles in about ten minutes for a session that runs 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Setup order matters more than gear brand. Fill the base so the downstem sits about an inch, maybe two, below the waterline: deeper than that and the draw turns into work. Pack the bowl loosely to the rim without pressing down, since airflow through the shisha is what carries the flavor. Cover with the HMD or with foil pulled drum-tight and poked with a ring of small holes.

The coal decision shapes the whole session. Natural coconut coals take about ten minutes on a burner to glow fully but burn clean and steady for 40-plus minutes. Quick-light coals ignite with a lighter in under a minute, which is convenient, but the accelerant that makes that possible is also what you taste for the first several minutes. Coconut is the counter recommendation for anyone smoking at home with a stove available.

Two habits separate a good session from a harsh one: start with two coals instead of three and add heat only if the clouds are thin, and lift or rotate the coals every 15 minutes or so rather than letting one spot of the bowl scorch.
