How do you clean a glass pipe?

Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt. Alcohol at 91 percent or stronger dissolves resin; coarse salt is insoluble grit that scrubs where no brush reaches. Seal the piece in a zip bag with both, shake for a few minutes, and rinse with hot water. That is the whole method for a hand pipe, and it costs a few dollars.

The chemistry is worth one sentence: resin is an oil, oils dissolve in alcohol rather than water, and the higher the alcohol percentage the faster it works, which is why 91 to 99 percent iso cleans in minutes where 70 percent soaks overnight. The salt is purely mechanical, so the coarser the better; fine table salt dissolves into the alcohol and stops scrubbing.

Big pieces follow the same recipe with logistics. Pull the bowl and downstem and bag those separately, pour alcohol and salt into the main chamber, cover the openings (palms or plugs) and shake, then rinse until the alcohol smell is completely gone. A crusted perc that the shake cannot reach responds to an overnight soak before a second shake. Pipe cleaners and cotton swabs finish the joints.

Cadence beats intensity. Fresh water every session and a real clean every week or two keeps the job at five minutes; a piece left until it is opaque takes an hour and never quite forgets. Two cautions: never pour boiling water into cold borosilicate, since even good glass dislikes a 100-degree jump, and skip the alcohol on acrylic or silicone pieces, which want warm soapy water instead.
