What do kratom strain colors actually mean?

Red, green and white refer to the color of the leaf's central vein at harvest and to how the leaf was dried afterward, not to different plants. All of it is one species, Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree in the coffee family, and the color names are the industry's shorthand for harvest timing and processing rather than a botanical category.

The naming stacks a place on top of the color: Bali, Maeng Da, Borneo, Malay. Those names originated as regional origins, though in today's market they function mostly as trade names for a vendor's particular leaf and process. Two brands' "Green Maeng Da" are not the same product, which is why brand consistency matters more than strain vocabulary once you find something you like.

Format is the more practical decision. Powder is ground whole leaf, the cheapest per gram and the most flexible, at the cost of handling. Capsules are the same powder pre-measured, trading cost for convenience and an exact count per bottle. Extracts concentrate the leaf's alkaloids into a much smaller dose form, and their labels state concentration for exactly that reason. What any of them does is the label's territory, not ours; the alkaloid content varies leaf to leaf, and reputable brands publish lab results the same way hemp brands publish COAs.
