What are rolling papers made of?

Four plant fibers cover almost the whole market: wood pulp, rice straw, hemp, and flax. The fiber choice sets the three things you can feel: burn speed, ash color, and how much you taste the paper instead of what is in it.

Wood pulp is the classic cigarette-style paper: the thickest and fastest-burning of the four, the easiest for beginners to roll because it holds a crease, and the most likely to add its own flavor. Rice papers sit at the opposite pole: thin, slow, nearly flavorless, and correspondingly slippery to roll. Hemp papers are the middle path most modern brands have settled on, a touch thicker than rice with decent grip and a slow, even burn. Flax behaves close to rice.

Weight matters as much as fiber. Paper is measured in GSM (grams per square meter), and "ultra-thin" papers run under about 14 GSM, roughly half the material of a standard sheet, which is the real reason connoisseurs chase them: less burning paper per puff. The see-through window on a pack of premium papers is the GSM talking.

The strip of glue along one edge is gum arabic, sap of the acacia tree, on essentially every reputable brand. Unbleached papers keep their brown color because the pulp skips the whitening step; whether bleached or not, what to avoid is any paper that crackles and sparks as it burns, the sign of mineral additives that better brands leave out.
